Pest control in Warrington, Knutsford and Lymm, 2010

Pest and vermin control in the North West has seen a lively start this year which is very surprising given the relatively cold winter of 2009/10.

Pest operatives were kept working with the usual town centre rats and mice calls during the winter of course, but the relatively cold late winter has already brought some ant infestation coming in.

The fairly wet summers of 2008 and 2009 were not to the liking of the hymenoptera (bees, ants, sawflies and wasps) but 2010 looks like it will turn out to be a hectic year for ant callouts.

Frequently ants nest under the floors of buildings and inside cavity walls causing a large number of foraging ants to visit kitchens and food cupboards.

However it is at the mating time when they can be most annoying as they release winged queens and males which then mate in flight.

The appearance of several thousands of these flying ants inside homes can be horrific indeed.

A somewhat new pest was very numerous in the Lancashire, Manchester and Cheshire area last season, the Varied Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci).

It was not common for pest controllers in Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire to encounter these pests until lately but they seemed to appear from nowhere in 2008 and already this spring has seen reports of varied carpet beetle in unprecedented numbers.

Having a similar life cycle to moths their larvae, called woolly bears can eat natural fibres and can do great damage to carpets and natural fabrics. They can be a difficult and persistent pest to remove.

Bed Bugs are carrying on their resurgence in the Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire area, frequently arriving as unwanted guests in the suitcases of home-coming travellers.

Often the first reaction of unfortunates who realise that they are infested with these horrific,blood-sucking insects is to burn the old beds and get.

This is an expensive mistake as despite their name bed bugs not only hide in beds and in an infested bedroom will be found anywhere within around five yards of the bed, in cupboards, drawers etc, even in electrical wall sockets and the new beds become rapidly re-infested.

A lot of people mix up bed bugs with dust mites which are not visible to the naked eye.

They dine just on blood which they syphon from their sleeping victims. People regularly associate bed bugs with dirty conditions but nothing could be further from the truth, they do not require dirt, they dine on you!
